One of the Most Complicated Languages

I’m not surprise if most of Cambodian young generation do not know how to greet important people (king, monk and officials) by using formal words in Khmer. In my opinion, it is one of the hardest languages to learn as well as to use. One of the reasons that it is very complicated is the words usage in Khmer where they different words will be used for different status. It might make some confusion, but if you are a very determined person, I promise you, you’ll get it!

In Khmer literacy class, we learnt to be MC for a special event. I’ve learnt tons of new Khmer words even though it is my first language. Here are some general information that I would like to share about being a Khmer MC:

  • During greeting, you greet the monk before you greet the king/queen. It is very confused, because some people greet the king/queen first.
  • To become a good speaker, eye contact, body and the tone are very important.
  • Singing national anthem is very important, but it doesn’t required to every event. Example of one event where singing national anthem is required: Khmer Literature Festival.

I was fascinated by the news vocabulary that I’ve learnt. It was a very great opportunity for me to know all of these because you’ll never know when you will be put on this spot one day!

Universal food for life

Coming to Liger Leadership Academy, I get a massive opportunity to take a look at literature, outside world issues, and travel, yet I forgot to pay attention to what forms and gives me energy. Fortunately, I got to take a deeper understanding about it in my Life Science class. Did you know that all living things require energy? Well, that’s right life runs on chemical energy. But the question is where does this chemical energy come from? Glucose.

Glucose is a simple carbohydrate that have a molecule formula of C6H12O6. It is basically sugar. But what make Glucose? Glucose is made using energy in light through a process called Photosynthesis

To elaborate on the picture above, photosynthesis requires Sunlight, Carbon dioxide, and water in order to run through this process. There are two stages of photosynthesis; Light Reaction and Calvin Cycle. Light Reaction is the stage where oxygen are produced for the next step; Calvin Cycle. Calvin Cycle is the stage where Glucose (sugars) are produced.

To me, this is a new and fascinating topic to look through because I’ve never studied such these little things in our body and life before. This also teaches me the importance of trees and those plants out there who are doing photosynthesis in order to produce glucose to carry out our life processes.

Newton’s Three Laws

Have you ever heard about a guy who discovered gravity? He is Issac Newton. Not only gravity discovery, Issac also discovered his three laws of motion. So what are those three laws?

According to Wikipedia, Newton used them to explain and investigate the motion of many physical objects and systems. Now let’s understand and learn about the first law. The first law of motion could also be called “The Law of inertia”. The definition of inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion which means an object would stays the same and it will change if there’s an unbalance force or external force acted on that object. Here’s an example of this first law:

This example shows that the ball will continue to stay at the spot where it was kept. This conveys the statement that says “an object at rest stays at rest and an object continues its state of motion”. The ball will not stay at that spot anymore because there’s a force to the ball which there was a person kicked the ball. At first I thought learning about science was complicated, but it’s easy if you break it down and understand the concept step by step.

There’s a website which helps guiding us learning about STEM where we use it all the time when we do reading. It is called ck12.org. If you are interested to read the 2nd and 3rd Newton’s Law of Motion, you can read it here: https://www.ck12.org/book/CK-12-Physical-Science-For-Middle-School/section/14.0/.

Rate and Speed

As I always say, as time goes by, we always learn new lessons. Here we are again in Math class, we ended this round by learning about “Rate and Speed”. But why is it important to learn about it? Well, it is obviously important because we need this to interact with our daily life.

Another question is what is the relationship between speed, distance and time? The relationship between three of them is that we can measure how quickly something could move from one point to another point.

Here’s the formula:

Distance = Speed * Time

Speed = Distance/Time

Time = Distance/Speed

Example:

A van traveled 216 km in 4 hours. Can you find its speed in km/h?

So the problem wants us to find the speed in km/h. Well, you already know the formula so it is easy! Just following the formula which Distance/Time:

216/4 = 54 km/h

So that’s the answer to the problem above!

Diving Deep Going Far

This is last round of our third year. However we had a different learning style in this round which we had an independent work. We started to learn how to manage our own time and our own learning. In addition to that, we also had a book learning which we chose one book and learned about it.

The book that I chose called “Diving Deep Going Far”. Reading the back cover of this book has interested me because I never read this kind of book before and I rarely see a novel that is related to Cambodia. It is a novel that was written to show women empowerment in Cambodia. It conveys the struggling of women in Cambodia, a country that has a particular tradition role for men and women. This book has written in different point of view from different person. Some chapters are written from the point of view of Nary and some are written from the point of view of the other people.

This book has evoked me a lot on how those women in the society being suffered. Also, one of the main challenges is that they are living as as a people that the society or family want them to be, not who they want themselves to be. It surprised me how this story ended. I don’t want to spoil what would happen, so you have to purchase this book and read it to know!

I would highly recommend this book to everyone and I also think that it is important to read this book because it raises the awareness of women empowerment. This book has taught me a lot and I got a lot of inspiration from this marvellous book , “Diving Deep, Going Far” as well and I hope you do too!

Multimedia Independent Learning

Entrepreneurship is one of my favorite subjects. There are a lot of different type of business and one of those is marketing in which the business marketers try to promote the product. Also, there are different ways that they do to promote such as poster, ad video, presentation, etc. Graphic design is also my passion. I really want to be a great graphic designer, but it requires creativity. To be honest, I’m not a creative person, therefore I would love to challenge myself in this independent work and making flyer.

To combine both business graphic design together, I would love to design a flyer. First of all, let’s understand what flyer is. According to the dictionary flyer is “a small handbill advertising an event or product.” I believe that a good flyer is a flyer that is creatively made and get a lot of noticed and read. According to digitalprinting.co.uk, there are 5 reasons to use flyers to promote special events:

    • Reach your audience
    • Get creative
    • Something tangible
    • Incentive
    • Measurable

To create this flyer, I learned the tutorial from YouTube and I used Adobe Photoshop to design. I have a very less knowledge about Photoshop, therefore it was a challenge for me. Getting creative might be the other one as well. I saw one poster that has been posted on YouTube and it was very interesting and would love to learn from it.

Here’s how my final product turned out:

One specific lesson that I learned was very new to me. I is called “Create clipping mask”. It is one of the functions in Photoshop where we can insert the image into the shape that we want. For example, I use the Clipping Mask tool to insert the group picture into the blue circle above as well as the buffaloes.

Getting to learn by my own is fun. Sometimes learning lessons by my own bring me more focus than learning as a group. However learning as team also bring me more ideas as well. Things always contain good and bad things. Overall, I really like this independent learning and I would love to have another one!

How To Happily Forgive When Someone Who Hurts You?

People experienced different sufferings. However, those suffering might not be forgotten. But I believe everyone on earth born with a power. The power of “forgiveness”.

Please do forgive, regardless of as if they deserve your forgiveness or not. However, you come to the right place! Reading these following steps will let you know how would you happily forgive someone who hurts you:

Step 1: Calm Down and Smile

When someone hurts you immediately, your feeling is burning and rising up at that moment. Remember that it doesn’t benefit you, so all you have to do is take a deep breath and happily smile. Did you know that scientists prove that a smile make people feel better? With a simplest smile on your face, bring your day amusement and sunshine.

Step 2: Release Those Stress Thoughts and Think of Your Happiness

When you smile and take a breathe, you’re releasing those stress and while you’re trying to calm, think about something that makes you happy. When you start to think about those positivities, your brain will contain all those sweetness instead of pressure. Accept the truth and that’s what make your life strong and beautiful.

Step 3: Think About What Would Be Better If You Forgive Instead of Holding Those Stress

Next, you have to wisely understand the advantages of forgive and the disadvantages of not forgiving. Remember that when you forgive, you ignore those problems and you got less anxiety. If you don’t forgive, those connection won’t grow and these problems always keep going.

Step 4: Just Let Those Go

Here’s the tough challenge: Just Let Things Go. But, don’t worry! You have to let those go and started something that is important to you. Stop blaming anyone, stop blaming the past and appreciate the present. Letting those go also express your responsibility, be thankful for it.

Step 5: Move On And Spread Love

Last but not least, move on and spread love. Spread love is a spiritual growth that everyone should have. After you follow the steps above, you finally forgive someone! Congratulations! Here’s the last extra step. Spread love. A two simplest word which connect the communication better. You already ignore those pain, so start to be kind and do good to them even though you don’t trust them. Do not revenge on what they’re doing. Like a quote says “Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Intelligent people ignore”.

I want to let the world remember to always remember that no one never makes mistake, so you’re strong enough to FORGIVE.

Making a Turtle Race From Coding?

As time passed by, the lesson of python code is getting deeper. Even though coding challenges me more than others, that’s my learning process. In this round, everything is new to me which I learned a lot from this!

Some people might familiar with Python already, but I’m completely new to it. However, Brian Tracy once said “Learn something new. Try something different. Convince yourself that you have no limits” which push me harder to the next level of who I am.

My coding facilitator has assigned all of the students to choose a coding project amongst the five projects and try to make it work. To complete each project, there’s a website called “CodeClub Project” which give us a very descriptive instructions and help us making this project accomplished.

The five projects have fascinated me and thousand of curiosities popped in my head. I always wonder how would this happen? It seems impossible to me at first, however hard-working had proved to me that it’s possible!

The five projects are Turtle Race, Secret Messages, Colorful Creations, RPG and Where is the Space Station? I chose the turtle race project which I’m trying to make the 5 turtles race and see which turtle wins!
